Given that analogical communication is intrinsecally ambiguous (please all re-read Watzlawick), it's no suprise that subtle gestures or behaviors can potentially mean completely different things. Also, women can use this ambiguity to protect themselves: "I didn't mean I was interested in you in <i>that</i> way...!"
